Imposter Syndrome: Recognise, Reframe, Reclaim
Have you ever whispered to yourself, "I'm not good enough" or "I don't know enough"? If you have, know that you're not alone. Imposter syndrome is an insidious foe that often lurks in the minds of competent individuals.
In a recent coaching session, I worked with a client who had amassed an impressive career. With over a decade of industry experience and a track record of turning skimpy budgets into substantial returns on investment, you would expect him to be dripping with confidence. But the truth was, he didn't.
My client's struggle was all too familiar. He had applied for a position he was undoubtedly qualified for. Yet, imposter syndrome's relentless whispers were undermining his self-assurance. "I don't think I know enough," he admitted. Despite his undeniable accomplishments, he felt like an imposter, questioning the legitimacy of his success.
Here's what we discussed:
1. Recognising the Imposter Syndrome: We began by acknowledging the imposter syndrome. Understanding that these feelings were not uncommon and could affect even the most accomplished individuals was a crucial first step. My client was not alone in this battle.
2. Reframing Success: We redefined what "good meant by breaking it into manageable pieces, creating a new, personalised definition of success that resonated with him.
3. Celebrating Milestones: We revisited the significant milestones in his career. Each accomplishment was like a brick in the foundation of his self-worth. His achievements weren't random; they directly resulted from his hard work, talent, and dedication.
4. Reclaiming Confidence: His most significant takeaway was that it wasn't about proving himself to others; it was about recognising his value to himself.
Think about your journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to be better despite your accomplishments? If so, know that you're not alone, and there's a path to liberation. Take a moment to reflect on your definition of "good" and the milestones that have shaped your journey.
